Who is required to fill out a DVIR?
Commercial motor vehicles drivers are responsible for inspections and for preparing a DVIR when they discover or are told about a safety-related defect or deficiency. Under 49 CFR 396.11, the report is generally prepared at the end of each workday for each vehicle operated. No report is required when no defect is found or reported. Before driving, the driver must also verify that the vehicle is safe to operate and review the last DVIR when applicable under 49 CFR 396.13.
