The road to safer, more efficient fleet operations starts with one decision — adopting telematics. But many companies stall after that initial step, unaware of how to build a program that delivers results. In a recent webinar, Motive and Sentry showed how to get more value from telematics systems, particularly dash cams.

Start with clarity, not cameras

The best programs don’t begin with hardware — they start with alignment. Before rolling out dash cams or driver development tools, top-performing fleets take the time to explain why the technology is being introduced, how it will be used, and what drivers can expect. Transparency doesn’t just reduce resistance — it lays the groundwork for lasting engagement.

“Drivers want to know what to expect. If you set that upfront and stay consistent, it makes the transition easier for everyone.

Use coaching to create change

Installing cameras alone won’t reduce accidents. Fleets need a clear coaching model to address unsafe behaviors and reinforce the positive. That means moving beyond one-time conversations or broad policy reminders.

Motive recommends a phased approach:

  • In-cab alerts give drivers a chance to self-correct
  • Self-coaching through the driver app supports autonomy
  • Manager-led coaching steps in when improvement stalls
  • Escalation is reserved for repeated or severe issues

This model is designed to build trust while holding drivers accountable.

Focus on behavior, Not just incidents

Dash cam footage offers more than evidence after a crash. When paired with AI and real-time feedback, dash cam footage helps fleets identify near-misses, unsafe habits, and coaching opportunities long before an incident occurs.

“Fleets used to rely on police reports and driver accounts,” said Jim Higbee, Senior Safety Specialist at Motive. “With video, they know exactly what happened — and they can react faster, coach smarter, and prevent more incidents.”

Look beyond safety

Telematics systems also support broader operational goals. Video data from telematics can also speed up insurance claims and help protect against nuclear verdicts, especially when fleets can show a pattern of proactive coaching.

According to Sentry, the value of telematics extends into insurance as well. For fleets in Sentry’s transportation business unit, there may even be premium discounts tied to data-sharing agreements — making the investment even more worthwhile.
