Managing a mixed fleet — combining heavy equipment, highway vehicles, small tools, and everything in between — can challenge even the most efficient organizations. The “Construction and Mixed Fleets: Smarter Operations, Safer Job Sites, and Lower Costs” breakout session at Vision 2025, demonstrated that, with the right platform and practices, it’s possible to streamline operations, improve safety, and cut unnecessary costs. Motive product experts were joined by Gilbert Solano, Manager of Facility and Support Operations at Watco, and Jeff Bozo, Fleet Director at Congruex, to discuss the impact using the whole Motive Platform has had on their fleet and asset operations.

Mixed fleets are a challenge to manage

When it comes to mixed fleets, there are so many details to be managed, and each vehicle or equipment type can have its own unique needs. This can create operational challenges, including:

  • Inefficient asset utilization: Equipment worth hundreds of thousands of dollars often sits idle or gets duplicated unnecessarily.
  • Fragmented safety practices: Managing different safety protocols across asset types leads to gaps in coverage and training.
  • Loss and theft: Losing track of assets — sometimes even returning owned equipment to rental companies — costs real money. Theft can feel rampant, and it can be impossible to get it back if you don’t know where the equipment is.
  • Uncoordinated maintenance: Over-maintaining idle equipment is a waste of resources, and forgetting maintenance for heavily used assets leads to breakdowns and costly repairs.

Manage your whole fleet on the Motive Integrated Operations Platform

By bringing all vehicles and assets onto Motive’s AI-powered platform, an organization can have a single place to manage everything. From AI-powered safety alerts in vehicles and yellow iron, to GPS asset tracking and integrated maintenance scheduling, a single system reduces complexity and ensures visibility across the business.

Maximize utilization, right-size fleets, and prevent loss and theft

Having a single solution for all vehicles and assets means an organization has full visibility into the location, usage, and maintenance information of everything within their fleet – all in one place. This makes it simple to see critical trends such as underused or overused assets and maintenance alerts, allowing you to proactively manage and right-size every part of your mixed fleet.

Instant GPS location also makes it easy to find assets, whether they are simply misplaced, hard to see, or even stolen. Solano has seen the impact of instant location insights firsthand. “We have 825 acres. So when we didn’t have telematics for our pieces of equipment, it took us hours to go looking for this piece of equipment to bring in to get maintenance done on it … or looking for one piece of equipment that could have been hiding behind another building,” said Solano.

Safety first, in every asset

Motive has long had the most accurate AI safety solution on the market for trucks. Now, there are models specifically designed for construction equipment that operate in more varied environments. These driver-facing models include drowsiness detection, distraction, cell phone use, and seat belt usage. Proactively identifying safety events within yellow iron means a reduction in accidents and better coaching across all parts of a fleet.

For Bozo, introducing the Motive AI Dashcam has made his fleet dramatically safer. “We’ve seen at least an 80% reduction in safety-related trips.”

Here are examples of the safety events captured by Motive’s AI models specifically for construction equipment:

Partnering with Motive for innovative use cases

In addition to using Motive to manage vehicles and construction equipment, Solano is using Motive’s cameras in new ways. Watco partnered with Motive to develop a waterproof case for open-cab equipment. They’re also using AI Omnicam under locomotives to prevent copper theft, and are even exploring solar-powered setups for AI Omnicams on port docks. Solano has implemented extensive geofencing, not just for safety, but to monitor valuable inventory like costly wiring and metals.

At Conguex, Bozo uses the Motive Card to take fuel management to the next level by linking job numbers to fuel purchases via dropdown menus in the app. This helps them both pay IFTA taxes seamlessly and understand how fuel spend and usage relate to their job costs.
