Accidents and unsafe driving put lives at risk — the most serious cost any fleet can face. They also disrupt operations, draining productivity and increasing turnover. FusionSite Services, a leading waste services provider, turned that around with Motive AI Dashcams, cutting claims by 98% even as the fleet more than doubled in size.
That’s the power of accurate AI detection. And in a recent conversation, FusionSite CIO Ryan Ennis shared what drove that transformation.
Watch the webinar: Saving lives with smarter tech — What to consider when choosing AI.
1. Accurate AI detection builds trust across the business
The value of safety technology begins with accurate, reliable data. For FusionSite Services, Motive’s precision in identifying unsafe driving behaviors, such as cell phone use and harsh braking, gave executives, insurers, and drivers confidence in the data.
That trust reshaped FusionSite Service’s approach to fleet safety. It meant that leadership could:
- Reward top performers
- Hold drivers accountable
- Negotiate lower insurance premiums by demonstrating improvement
“When you get a provider like Motive where this is trusted information, you’re able to tell your story as an organization and really impact everyone in a positive way,” Ennis explained.
2. Safety results scale fast
When FusionSite first adopted Motive, the fleet had 479 vehicles and recorded 76 claims in a single year. With more than 1,000 vehicles today, the company has recorded just one claim this year. That’s a 98% reduction in claims — delivering millions of dollars in savings and dramatically reducing risk.
“The reduction down to one event, that’s a $2.5 million reduction on an insurance plan, and that’s in Year 1 out of a five-year measured time frame,” Ennis said. “So imagine the next period, the ROI that you’re going to get as you’re turning that way.”
Backed by AI dash cams, safety incidents for FusionSite sharply declined, with the company seeing:
- An 89% reduction in total safety events
- A 92% reduction in cell phone–related incidents
Accurate detection from dual-facing AI dash cams caught risks early, while automated and in-person coaching helped change drivers’ habits.
3. Coaching is most effective when it’s done in real time
For FusionSite, the speed of Motive’s AI alerts mattered as much as their accuracy. Automated in-cab alerts gave drivers instant feedback, while events appeared in the Motive Dashboard almost immediately so managers could coach drivers while the situation was fresh.
“That accountability — driver to manager, manager to leadership — is what changes behavior,” Ennis said.
4. Recognition and incentives drive adoption
FusionSite didn’t just coach unsafe behavior — it celebrated safe driving. The company built a structured recognition program that paid drivers monthly bonuses for great safety scores, with larger payouts for location and regional leaders.
- “We more than doubled our budget in paying drivers for what they earned by doing the behaviors that we asked,” Ennis said.
- 98% of drivers were using the Motive Driver App in the first week.
That level of buy-in turned safety from a compliance requirement to a competitive advantage.
5. Increased visibility improves the whole operation
Backed by dual-facing video, FusionSite gained new insight into the challenges drivers face every day. Reviewing cell phone events captured by the AI cameras, for example, revealed that:
- Dispatchers were calling drivers mid-route
- Vehicles lacked cell phone holders.
With this insight, FusionSite improved internal processes, invested in better equipment, and set drivers up for success. AI-powered dash cams didn’t just detect unsafe driving behaviors. They revealed opportunities to improve other inefficiencies.
6. ROI goes beyond insurance savings
FusionSite’s Motive investment paid for itself many times over in reduced claims, but the benefits went further.
- Turnover dropped from 7% to just 1% in a single year.
- Insurance costs shrank by millions.
- The operational drag of constant hiring and retraining nearly disappeared.
“There’s nothing better than looking at your driver population and saying, ‘We can do this, and we are going to save lives together,’” Ennis said.
Raising the bar for every fleet
FusionSite’s story proves that AI detection is more than a technology upgrade — it’s a way to transform fleet safety, safety culture, and financial performance.
For fleets in any industry, the takeaway is clear: Accurate AI detection creates trust, coaching, and accountability that benefit the entire organization.
