United Vision Logistics saves millions in litigation and downtime costs; reduces speeding incidents by 75% with Motive.

UVL needed an AI-powered solution to aid in reducing accidents through driver coaching, to accurately detect and report accidents when they occur, and to provide the high-quality video evidence required to dispute false claims and identify at-fault accidents. Motive was the solution.

Overview

United Vision Logistics (UVL) is a leading transportation, logistics and warehousing company that provides a wide range of services, including truckload, flatbed, and specialized transportation, as well as logistics, warehousing and supply chain management. Founded in 1947, UVL has a strong presence in the energy industry, while also serving a variety of other key industries, including manufacturing, construction, agriculture, and retail. UVL has a fleet of approximately 1,200 vehicles owned and driven by independent contractors who drive about 55 million miles per year.

United Vision Logistics faced significant challenges in managing and resolving accident claims. Although most of the accidents were not the fault of the company, UVL lacked the real-time video and data to exonerate themselves and their drivers from not-at-fault accidents and false claims. This also led to prolonged and costly litigation due to a lack of information about the root cause of accidents.

To address these challenges, United Vision Logistics turned to Motive for help. By investing in Motive AI Dashcams, UVL improved accident response time, gathered video evidence needed for exoneration from fault, improved driving behaviors and overall safety performance, and ensured driver compliance with safe driving practices. UVL also experienced a 75% reduction in speeding incidents by using in-cab notifications, and it benefitted from real-time video evidence that has saved the company millions through the mitigation of claims costs, legal fees, operational downtime, and wasted opportunity costs.

Challenge

“Safety is the lifeblood of what we do every day,” says United Vision Chief Legal Officer Ryan Domengeaux. “We have an obligation to the motoring public and to our drivers, so it’s critically important for us to prevent unsafe driving behavior and accidents. Motive helps us do that each day.”

Accidents happen, but when they do, UVL wants to understand exactly what happened. Without video evidence, UVL would spend months, if not years, investigating and managing a single accident claim to closure.

“Prior to dash cams, the resources spent on understanding what happened in an accident, and then dealing with the claim, was extraordinarily inefficient and expensive for us,” says Domengeaux. “It’s not just the money involved in paying claims, but it’s also the operational and opportunity costs that negatively impact the company.”

UVL needed accurate collision detection and a clear picture of what happened in every incident so they could understand which claims were legitimate. They also lacked visibility into driver behaviors that might be contributing to accidents in the first place, such as speeding, hard braking, or rolling stop signs. This lack of visibility made it impossible to help drivers improve.

UVL had several goals:

  • Create and foster an environment of safety for its personnel and the motoring public.
  • Provide real-time driver coaching to improve driving behavior and reduce accidents.
  • Gain accurate collision detection for faster accident response.
  • Use high-quality road-facing video footage to resolve claims quickly and fairly.
  • Improve operational efficiency and reduce time spent managing claims.
  • Optimize drive time, minimize violations, and improve CSA scores.
  • Provide a safety solution to protect its owner-operators and drivers.

With accurate data from the right system, UVL also knew it could improve compliance and CSA road safety scores that are monitored by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), giving its owner operators the most time on the road within regulations. So, UVL chose Motive and deployed Motive road-facing AI Dashcams throughout its owner-operator fleet of vehicles.

Solution

Motive AI Dashcams had an immediate impact on United Vision Logistics’ safety performance. One example is through Motive’s in-cab alerts. These alerts notify drivers and UVL personnel in real time, giving drivers the power to rectify unsafe driving behaviors immediately, whenever they emerge. The Motive AI Dashcams instantly detect certain unsafe behaviors, such as speeding, rolling stop signs, and close following, and immediately alert drivers through audible and visible alerts.

“The impact of Motive’s real-time alerts on safety performance has been incredible,” Domengeaux says. “Motive AI Dashcams give our drivers a valuable reminder whenever they go over the speed limit. By reminding them to slow down and stay safe, Motive AI Dashcams have reduced speeding in our fleet by 75%.”

Thanks to Motive’s First Responder feature, UVL can respond to life-threatening incidents quicker than they have in the past, as well as more efficiently and effectively. “Recently, we experienced a rollover incident, and it showed us just how invaluable the First Responder feature is to our company,” Domengeaux says. “I was in an in-person meeting with the President and our Director of Compliance and Risk Management when I received the text and email alerts for the incident, almost simultaneous to the time of the collision. We immediately sourced the video from the email, and my first thoughts were, ‘Is our driver okay? Is anyone hurt?  Is the scene secure?’ The First Responder feature gave us the answers to those questions in just a few seconds.”

“What amazed me was how easy it was to act on the incident through the First Responder tools,” Domengeaux continues. “I was able to immediately source our driver’s phone number, which allowed me to check on his well-being and ask about scene securement. Then, the available emergency services link allowed me to connect with the proper authorities, where they dispatched police, firefighters, and an ambulance, and they did so based on the collision data that was automatically shared with them. The live call updates even let our internal folks know I was already on the line with emergency services. This eliminated redundancy and allowed us to stay on the same page without stepping on each other’s toes. The process could not have been easier or more intuitive.”

With Motive First Responder, Domengeaux says, “Having everything right there — the accident location, GPS coordinates, the video, and my driver’s number — was invaluable to us. It saved time and allowed us to deploy the necessary resources to secure the scene and render assistance.” Whether it involves a simple flat tire or an actual collision, UVL now has the information to make critical decisions quickly.

Motive technology has also empowered UVL personnel to respond to collisions much faster. “Within minutes, we’ll get an email and a text message, and then we’ll see the video,” Domengeaux explains. “Having the video gives us the power to act on every incident immediately. It shows us what happened and helps us deploy our accident response plan.”

“Motive allows us to share videos and that data with our owner-operators and drivers,” Domengeaux says. “There’s nothing better than having a video to tell you exactly what happened at the scene rather than historically relying on two different stories from people. This helps us resolve the claims that need to be resolved and address the ones where we are not at fault.”

The Motive AI Dashcams are also helping UVL’s owner-operators and drivers improve. Each driver is coached based on their behaviors, while high-performing drivers are not burdened with additional training that isn’t necessary for them.

“It’s eye-opening for our owner-operators and drivers,” Domengeaux notes. “They have realized that the cameras are a protection for them. It helps them improve, and it also helps to exonerate them when an accident is not their fault, and that’s invaluable.”

Motive also provides UVL drivers with accurate Hours of Service (HOS) to avoid violations. It precisely tracks mileage and fuel usage across jurisdictions to streamline IFTA filings.

Results

For UVL, the time and cost savings resulting from adopting the Motive platform have been significant. The real-time data and video evidence provided by Motive have allowed UVL to train drivers in real time so they can improve, which reduces accidents. Now, UVL is resolving claims quickly when accidents do happen, thereby reducing the need for protracted litigation. They are also saving millions by avoiding potential legal fees and operational downtime.
