One platform. Zero claims. Safer drivers in just two months. How Motive helped Veit do what other tech providers couldn’t.
Veit and Company is a leading specialty contractor that’s been in business for nearly a century. To power large, complex projects, Veit relies on a diverse fleet of vehicles, including straight trucks, roll-off trucks, and boom trucks. Coordinating safety and compliance across a vast operation requires complete visibility and real-time feedback that supports accountability at every level.
When Fleet Safety Manager Jon Somerville stepped into the role, he set out to modernize Veit’s approach to fleet safety. After evaluating eight brands of safety technology, he chose Motive to help build a safer, more productive, and more profitable fleet.
Since adopting Motive, Veit has seen measurable improvements in both driver safety and fleet performance. The company has used AI-powered insights to reduce severe driving events, lower claims costs, and keep projects and drivers on schedule.

Before Motive, Veit relied on separate systems for fleet tracking, compliance, and safety, making it difficult to manage all their operations in one place. Veit’s existing technology was clunky and difficult to use. And without AI dash cams, the team lacked real-time visibility into unsafe driving behavior.
With only a small internal team managing the fleet, Somerville needed a single, unified platform to improve productivity and gain visibility into unsafe driving behaviors.
“I was looking for a unicorn,” Somerville said. “One system where I could do everything related to drivers. I wanted to change the safety culture.”
What stood out about Motive wasn’t just the technology — it was the way the business showed up. Unlike competitors who adjusted pricing only after learning Veit was considering Motive, the Motive team was upfront, transparent, and collaborative throughout the process.
“We wanted a partnership,” Somerville explained. “Not just a tool, but a partnership with a company that knows what they’re doing. We wanted technology that has been proven.”
Intent on investing in the most reliable AI dash cams available, Somerville tested eight dash cam solutions in his personal vehicle. Motive’s accurate AI detection stood out against the competition, detecting and alerting to unsafe driving behavior more reliably.
“Putting the cameras to the test in my own vehicle helped me make the decision, ultimately,” said Somerville.
By implementing Motive AI Dashcams, Veit shifted its safety approach from reactive to proactive. The company installed road-facing AI Dashcams first, later adding dual-facing AI Dashcams before turning on in-cab alerts. To build trust, Somerville met with drivers before and after installation, explaining how the technology worked and giving drivers time to adjust.
Ultimately, Somerville’s message to drivers about the technology resonated: “Safety isn’t to you, it’s for you.”
“We got out in front of it, built an understanding with our drivers,” Somerville says. “We taught them that dash cams aren’t about disciplinary action. They’re about coaching. And once we started having driver exonerations and incidents, the buy-in just accelerated.”
Motive dash cams were intuitive and easy to use. With drivers, Somerville made his expectations clear from the start, saying that stop sign violations and cell phone use would not be tolerated.
“The amount of, initially, people that had cell phones in their hands while driving a truck — it absolutely floored me,” Somerville said. “So I changed my approach. I stopped reiterating statute and regulation, and I moved it from the mind to the heart.”
Since rollout, Veit has seen an 87% reduction in the frequency of severe events. The fleet went from having a severe event every 39 miles to having one every 303 miles.
“That was huge, huge,” Somerville said. “And the only thing I did in-between there, I turned on the in-cab alerts.”
That’s not all.
For Somerville, it’s a clear sign that behavior-based safety is working. And the impact goes beyond driving performance and lower costs.
“With Motive, we can do everything right from one platform,” Somerville said. “We don’t have to send out paper documents and verify that they got there. We just pull it up on the dashboard and look at it. It’s awesome.”
Motive has also helped Veit respond faster to incidents and reduce liability. Any time there’s an incident, Somerville receives a text and an email within seconds — giving him the context he needs to act quickly.
In one case, a minor accident turned into a legal claim weeks later — until Motive dash cam footage showed what really happened.
Beyond dash cams, Veit now uses Motive Asset Gateways to monitor job trailers and recover stolen equipment. The company recently purchased 33 more Asset Gateways and is considering adding more of them to heavy machinery.
“Since we installed Motive in 2022, our liability costs have dropped every year,” Somerville said. “And this year, knock on wood — we’ve paid out zero for 2025.”
Veit’s general counsel celebrates the results as well, calling for Motive to be implemented in all of Veit’s vehicles.
With leadership rallying behind the results and new technology expanding across the fleet, Somerville sees Motive as far more than a vendor. It’s a partnership he personally championed — and one he takes pride in every day.
“I’m passionate about it, because it was a decision that I made. And you guys have my back. It’s awesome.”
