Centurion & Spartan Logistics: Driving Safety, Efficiency, and Engagement with Motive

With Motive’s Integrated Operations Platform, Centurion & Spartan Logistics is transforming safety, streamlining compliance, and empowering drivers through a culture of continuous improvement.

Overview

Centurion & Spartan Logistics is a prominent FedEx linehaul service provider operating across eight locations. The organization manages more than 180 power units, including approximately 150 active FedEx linehaul tractors, and plays a critical role in the timely, reliable transport of goods for FedEx. Since its inception in 2015 with just four trucks, the company has grown steadily in tandem with FedEx’s contractor demand.

At the helm of fleet operations is Dakota Jackson, Fleet Manager. With four years at the company, Dakota oversees fleet utilization, lifecycle management, and while navigating the complexities of a large, distributed operation. His remit includes maintaining compliance, streamlining processes, and sustaining driver engagement across teams and locations.

The company sets itself apart through a strong safety culture and recognition of excellence. This includes innovative programs like their Safety Shield Program, which motivates drivers to improve driving skills and safety through “Shield and Sword challenge Coin Awards,” culminating in the coveted “Helmet Award.” This emphasis on operational discipline and driver engagement has been instrumental in Centurion & Spartan Logistics’ success as a FedEx Linehaul service provider.

Challenge

Before implementing Motive, Centurion & Spartan Logistics faced challenges managing visibility, compliance, and driver engagement across its growing fleet. The company relied on multiple systems for day-to-day operations: Omnitracs for ELD and compliance, Lytx for in-cab cameras, and Whip Around for maintenance tracking (still in use).

Faulty or disconnected cameras often went unnoticed for extended periods, and identifying operational issues required extensive manual investigation across systems. Managers frequently had to jump between portals to match safety events with driver logs or GPS data, which slowed responses and limited coaching opportunities.

Compliance monitoring was also inefficient. Managers had to pull individual logs for more than 170 drivers to verify load entries and ensure accuracy. As Dakota explained, “We had our VEDR, we had our ELD system, and we had a maintenance tracking system. It was a lot of going to different places for sources of information.” This fragmented approach consumed valuable time and increased the risk of oversight when pulling driver events or compliance data.

Solution

Since adopting the Motive AI-powered Integrated Operations Platform, Centurion & Spartan Logistics has achieved measurable improvements in safety, compliance, and driver engagement. By consolidating key functions once spread across multiple systems into a single platform, the company has streamlined its operations and significantly enhanced responsiveness across its eight locations.

With Motive, management can now identify disconnected cameras or incident alerts in real time, enabling the team to respond within hours instead of days or weeks. This proactive visibility ensures that every truck maintains an active dash cam, strengthening safety and compliance. Motive’s automated reporting and flagging features also allow management to quickly review and correct log or load-entry errors across more than 170 drivers, reducing manual review time and maintaining a strong DOT safety score.

Driver culture has evolved dramatically. Centurion & Spartan Logistics’ Safety Shield Program motivates drivers to improve driving skills and safety through Motive Safety Scores, adding a gamified layer of accountability and friendly competition. Drivers actively track and improve their performance, fostering teamwork and continuous improvement. As one example, a 30-year veteran driver improved his Safety Score by 10 points in just two weeks after receiving coaching from the Motive platform.
Motive’s unified platform also has streamlined incident review and reporting. When events occur, videos are automatically available with timestamps and locations, allowing management to focus on addressing the event rather than searching for footage. As a result, safety incidents are now addressed proactively, compliance errors are caught earlier, and both managers and drivers spend less time on administrative work and more time improving performance.
