In September, a tragic fuel tanker accident in Mexico City claimed lives and injured dozens. It was a stark reminder of the risks of transporting combustible materials and underscored the importance of safety, visibility, and accountability on the road.
New requirements set out by The Comisión Nacional de Energía (CNE) and Agencia de Seguridad, Energía y Ambiente (ASEA) require fleets transporting fuel, LP gas, and petrochemicals aim to strengthen safety and traceability—helping prevent future tragedies and protecting communities. Motive can help fleets with these new regulations and also help improve driver safety more broadly.
What the mandate requires
To enhance security and improve regulatory oversight of fuel transport, the CNE established a national traceability framework. This requires that fleets transporting combustible products be equipped with GPS systems that report in real time to government oversight platforms.
Additionally, each vehicle must have its own valid operating permit and display a durable QR code that links directly to its permit and registration information. These steps are designed to increase transparency, reduce the risk of accidents, and ensure safer transport of critical goods. Fleets that fail to comply may face penalties, fines, or even impoundment.
