For many heavy goods vehicle (HGV) drivers across the UK, the thought of having a camera fitted in the cab feels uncomfortable at best. After decades spent behind the wheel and running fleets myself, I understand why. Driving is a demanding job, and for those doing it day in, day out, the cab is more than just a workspace; it’s a kind of second home.

The idea of a camera pointing at you while you’re working long hours, grabbing a quick break, or simply trying to get the job done can feel intrusive. More to the point, it can feel like you’re not trusted to do what you’ve already proven you do well. The landscape we’re all operating in has changed. Roads are busier. Claims are more complex. And when something goes wrong, the burden of proof often falls squarely on the shoulders of the lorry driver, regardless of who was actually at fault. This is where the role of modern AI‑enabled dash cams becomes not just relevant, but critical.

When incidents happen, drivers often carry the burden of proof

When there’s an incident involving an HGV, be it a collision, a complaint from another road user, or something more serious,  the response is often swift and thorough. The police get involved. Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) investigators may take interest. Insurers launch enquiries.

Without evidence to support your account of what happened, even a well‑handled situation can escalate into a formal investigation, points on your licence, or disciplinary action. In the most serious cases, professional drivers may face consequences for what happened, simply because there was no footage to prove they weren’t at fault. Any driver who’s been in the game long enough has seen it play out.

AI dash cams capture context, not just collisions

This is why AI dashcams,  particularly enterprise-grade solutions, are being widely adopted by responsible operators. Unlike traditional dash cams that record hours of footage to be sorted through manually after the fact, AI-powered cameras actively detect and analyse key driving behaviours and events. These include following distance, lane discipline, distraction, sudden braking or acceleration, and forward collision risks.

Most importantly, they don’t just show what happened during an incident; they capture the critical seconds beforehand. That context can be the difference between losing your livelihood and being rightly exonerated.

Take, for example, a common scenario: You’re approaching a busy roundabout on the A14. It’s raining, visibility isn’t great, and a vehicle in the next lane suddenly veers across your path without indicating. You react instantly, brake hard, and keep your rig under control. Nothing hits, no one is hurt, but a shaken witness behind you reports “dangerous driving by a lorry.” Without video evidence, that report could trigger a formal complaint. With dashcam footage, however, the reality and record is clear: a safe, professional reaction to a dangerous manoeuvre by another road user.

Privacy and GDPR must be part of the conversation

Of course, no discussion about dashcams is complete without addressing privacy concerns ,  and rightly so. Under UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and, where applicable, EU data protection rules, drivers have the legal right to know how they’re being monitored. Properly implemented systems must be transparent, lawful, and fair.

Operators need to explain why dashcams are being installed, ensure they only capture footage relevant to road safety, and provide secure access controls. Data retention policies must be in place. Typically, footage is automatically deleted after 40-100 hours unless an incident occurs. Drivers are also entitled to request access to footage involving them, a right that, in practice, helps protect them just as much as it protects the operator.

Technology works best when drivers are included

Still, many drivers remain sceptical. Cameras can feel like a challenge to professional judgement, particularly when they’re introduced poorly. The issue often lies not with the camera itself, but in how it’s deployed.

The best operators take steps to ensure drivers are brought into the process. When a system is introduced properly, with clear communication, fair policies, and a focus on protection, not punishment, most drivers quickly come to see it as an asset.

The operator case is clear — faster claims, stronger compliance

For operators, the business case is equally strong. Insurance premiums for HGV fleets have risen dramatically in recent years. Minor claims can now spiral into six-figure settlements, and insurers increasingly expect operators to have proactive risk management measures in place,  including dashcams. In many cases, having footage readily available can resolve claims in days rather than dragging them out over months.

Having footage also provides vital evidence during DVSA investigations or hearings before the Traffic Commissioner. For companies trying to retain skilled, reliable drivers, having a way to quickly clear them of false allegations is invaluable.

Dashcams aren’t about surveillance — they’re about protection

I’ve seen dozens of real-world examples where AI dashcams have protected drivers and companies alike. Drivers accused of causing damage, only for footage to prove they never touched a thing. Allegations of aggressive driving dismissed after the camera showed deliberate brake-checking by another vehicle.

When you have clear, objective evidence, the truth is on your side. This isn’t about policing drivers. It’s about ensuring that when something does go wrong, there’s an honest record of how it unfolded. Not to catch you out, but to back you up.

In today’s haulage industry, with all its pressures, regulations, and risks, a well-placed camera might just be the one thing standing between a clean licence and a career-ending accusation.

Protect your drivers. Protect your O-licence. Protect your business.
