The short-haul exemption is an exception under the FMCSA’s hours-of-service regulations. The exception states that if drivers operate within a 150-air-mile radius of their normal work reporting location and don’t exceed a maximum duty period of 14 hours, they’re exempt from HOS reporting regulations.

The hours-of-service regulations were enacted by the FMCSA. They include safety-related requirements such as how long a driver can drive during a shift, when they have to take a break, and how much time they have to take off between shifts.
