What is the HOS disciplinary policy?

To encourage HOS compliance, fleets can establish disciplinary policies to enforce when HOS rules aren’t met. By enforcing HOS disciplinary policies, fleet managers reduce fleet liabilities, increase productivity, and ensure smoother fleet operations.

An example of an HOS disciplinary policy can include progressive discipline steps for minor, significant, and severe misconducts. Actions can include verbal warnings, written warnings, and progressive working-day suspensions before employee dismissal.

Because HOS rules are for the safety of the driver, it’s recommended for administrators to work collaboratively with their drivers to ensure compliance and safeguard the fleet.

Another way to keep drivers encouraged is to create a reward programs to offer incentives and recognitions (bonuses, gift cards, verbal acknowledgment) that credit drivers for complying with HOS rules.
