How Rosendin Electric leveraged Motive to improve safety and profitability.

Discover how the Motive Safety and Tracking & Telematics platform helped reduce risky driving behaviors, lower costs, and recover stolen assets.

Overview

Headquartered in San Jose, California, Rosendin is an employee-owned electrical contractor. With revenues over $2 billion, Rosendin is one of the largest electrical contractors in the United States, employing over 7,000 people. Rosendin was also ranked in the top 10 U.S. specialty contractors by Engineering News-Record (ENR). For more than 100 years, Rosendin has created a reputation for delivering quality electrical and communications installations, building value for clients, and helping people grow within the company.

For Rosendin, safety is paramount. With offices from Honolulu to Baltimore, 17 regional offices, and job sites across the United States, the sizable electrical contractor is committed to improving safety. And with a fleet of more than 1,200 vehicles, Rosendin realized they had room for improvement.

To bolster safety and reduce incidents, Rosendin looked for a long-term partner that would not only provide cutting-edge technology, but would work with them to develop a program to identify risky driving behaviors, coach drivers, and provide greater visibility into their projects, operations, and the health of their fleet. They chose Motive to help achieve those goals.

Challenge

Gaining visibility into projects and operations to improve safety and profitability

Traveling to and from hundreds of job sites across the United States, Rosendin workers spend a lot of time in their vehicles. Keeping more than 7,000 employees safe on the roads is a challenge. “We’re a safety-focused company. Being in construction, safety has to be and is our number one priority. We’re always looking for new ways to keep our workers safer, and to create a safer environment around us at all times,” said Matt Lamb, Chief Information Officer at Rosendin.

Rosendin not only needed a way to gain visibility into their projects and workers’ driving behaviors like idling or personal usage of the vehicle, but also to provide real-time coaching to correct any risky behaviors, including cell phone usage, drowsiness, and speeding.

Furthermore, Rosendin was looking for a technology partner that could provide exoneration evidence for when their employees are involved in an incident but are not at fault.

Tracking the location and maintenance of their fleet was also a focus for Rosendin. With more than a thousand vehicles, unauthorized use and theft of assets can be a costly challenge, if not addressed.

Solution

Real-time coaching, monitoring, and asset protection

Rosendin rolled out Motive Driver Safety to its fleet to provide specialty contractors with real-time coaching when the Motive AI Dashcam detects risky behavior, and to give managers the opportunity to coach employees on an ongoing basis. The ability to take immediate corrective action and to follow up later with coaching empowers Rosendin to reduce driving behaviors that can lead to costly and dangerous incidents.

At the end of the day, the cameras are a win. And seeing the capabilities of Motive and how the Motive team has provided support every step of the way, it’s a win-win.

Jon Fontaine, Corporate Fleet Manager, Rosendin Electric

Motive Tracking & Telematics allows managers to track fault codes, vehicle location, idling using the Vehicle Gateway, and asset location using the Asset Gateway. It even caught a theft in progress and helped Rosendin employees track down the stolen vehicle. “Just a short while ago, one of our vans was stolen. It was in the middle of the night, and I hopped out of bed and quickly ran over to my computer. Thanks to the Vehicle Gateway, I started tracking the van while I was on the phone with the San Jose Police Department,” said Jon Fontaine, Corporate Fleet Manager. “We were able to track it and recover it. We are barely scratching the surface of what this technology can do.”

Results

Exonerations, less waste, and safer workers

With a reduction in risky behaviors and coachable events, Rosendin has not only seen the direct impact Motive AI Dashcams can provide on accident prevention but also on what happens after an incident takes place. “We’ve seen multiple exonerations after using Motive cameras. Because we have video proof,” said Fontaine. “At the end of the day, the cameras are a win. And seeing the capabilities of Motive and how the Motive team has provided support every step of the way, it’s a win-win.”

Rosendin also saw a reduction in fuel waste using the Vehicle Gateway to monitor idling, which saves money and has a positive environmental impact. From late 2021 to July 2022, Rosendin saw more than a 40% reduction in idling time. That reduction also contributed to a five-miles-per-gallon increase in fuel efficiency across the fleet.
