Luxury coach operator puts safety in the spotlight with Motive AI Dashcams.
Dreamliner, the largest luxury tour bus operator in the entertainment industry, operates 200 state-of-the-art coaches that are decked out like luxury hotels on wheels. The company creates unique designs and layouts for each client to reflect their unique style and meet their precise needs for comfort and convenience. Valued at upwards of $1M each, Dreamliner coaches are on the road with stars such as Drake, Doja Cat, and Olivia Rodrigo.
Dreamliner’s previous electronic logging devices just weren’t rock star quality. The company needed far more than just a telematics solution and sought an integrated platform to keep drivers and clients safe and protect the company from frivolous lawsuits. Dreamliner invested in Motive AI Dual-facing Dashcams for safety, Asset Gateways for tracking trailers and other equipment, and Vehicle Gateways to track the location of coaches and ensure compliance.
Dreamliner Coaches travel day and night and long distances to get their rock star clients between stadiums and entertainment venues across the country. Their drivers hit the highways but they’re also navigating tight spaces, sometimes with police escorts, to keep them on the move. They’re carrying hungry and tired rock stars and keeping them safe from adoring, rowdy fans hoping for a glimpse of their favorite performers. No detail is overlooked, including the safety of those stars who have already achieved their dreams and those on the road to stardom.
Dreamliner previously operated with only outdated electronic logging devices to comply with regulations. The company needed a more modern solution that combined tracking and telematics, compliance and driver safety in a single solution, and that could protect drivers and the company from false accident claims that were often filed by those looking for a big payday. Without dash cams, whenever an accident took place, Dreamliner didn’t have proof of what happened. Instead, they relied solely on the version of events they gleaned from drivers, witnesses and law enforcement.
Prior to investing in Motive, Dreamliner lacked visibility into driver behavior and road conditions and wasn’t aware of accidents until a driver called in to report one. Without dash cams, when a safety incident occurred, Dreamliner had to rely on driver and eyewitness accounts, which often conflicted with each other. Dreamliner didn’t know what led up to accidents, how or when they occurred or anything about road conditions. The Dreamliner safety team found themselves responding and reacting, instead of having insights and data in hand for real-time decision making.
Dreamliner and the team knew they needed to improve safety to reduce accidents, optimize the efficiency of its operations, and protect the company and its reputation, drivers, and the stars and crew riding in the back.
When Dreamliner introduced Motive Dual-facing AI Dashcams, Vehicle Gateways and Asset Gateways to their fleet, it took safety and efficiency to a new level.
“Motive AI Dashcams allow us to keep our drivers and customers safe,” says Dreamliner General Manager Mike Ragan. “They’ve been pivotal in raising our drivers’ level of awareness and making us a more professional fleet.”
Dreamliner has reduced unsafe driving behaviors, including distracted driving, cell phone use and speeding. Before AI Dashcams, Dreamliner had no way to detect unsafe driving behavior in real time. Now, Dreamliner uses Motive AI Dashcams to alert drivers to unsafe driving habits immediately, right inside the coach.
Dreamliner’s safety team uses the Safety Score displayed on their Motive Fleet Dashboard to track safety performance over time, both by group and individually by driver. They’re able to see at a glance where their biggest wins and liabilities are, then take immediate action to improve or reward their team. Drivers can see their score, and other company driver’s scores, right in their Driver App too.
“Our drivers are very competitive,” says Ragan. “Having the safety scores that our drivers can actually see is helping them get better because they want to be the top rank. It’s also making the company safer.”
The AI Dashcam’s real-time alerts remind drivers to stay in their lane or keep their eyes on the road. With regular driver coaching by the Dreamliner safety team, the company has seen an improvement in road safety and productivity.
“Our safety director uses Motive every day,” Ragan says. “Motive is doing the work that several employees would have to do. Now, it’s quick and he can find everything himself.”
AI Dashcams have given Dreamliner’s customers more confidence, just knowing that the cameras are there. “With AI Dashcams, we’ve been able to show our clients that we’re safety oriented,” Ragan says. “Knowing that we have an eye on our team and our equipment, makes them feel safer and more secure.”
Dreamliner’s safety team uses the Motive Fleet Dashboard daily to monitor driving performance and hours of service. The Motive platform has improved the efficiency of Dreamliner’s operations across the board, with several Dreamliner departments using Fleet View in the Motive Fleet Dashboard to track the location of vehicles in real time and identify which driver is assigned to a vehicle.
“Motive has helped us a lot with our different departments being able to work together better,” Ragan says. The leasing department uses Fleet View to track coaches and no longer needs to call the safety team, saving hours of time spent chasing answers to questions that can easily be answered right from the Motive platform. Compliance reporting is now just a few clicks in Motive, versus hours of manual calculations.
Dreamliner’s service department uses Motive too to proactively manage routine service and to pull engine fault codes to determine if an issue can be fixed on the road safely, or if a mechanic is needed. Now Dreamliner knows the issue before they dispatch service and can bring the right tools and parts the first time.
Claims are a whole lot easier now that Dreamliner can send insurance companies accident videos right from Motive. “They can see everything,” says Ragan. “It makes it a whole lot easier on everybody, and it moves the process along. Once they see that we have dash cams, there’s usually no litigation at all. We no longer have people tied up trying to do investigations or managing false claims.”
For Ragan and the team at Dreamliner, Motive has earned a standing ovation. “It’s protecting our drivers. It’s protecting the company. And, its protecting our tours as well.”
