Frequently asked questions
How does in-cab alert coaching work?
Drivers can receive alerts while driving to correct issues immediately with the Motive AI Dashcam. With up to 99% accuracy, the Motive AI Dashcam detects more than 20 events and unsafe driving behaviours, including mobile phone usage, drowsiness, and close following. When an unsafe behaviour is detected by the AI Dashcam, the driver receives an audio or visual alert through the camera.
Managers can easily customise their coaching setup to focus on the behaviours that matter most. Enable in-cab alerts to empower drivers to self-correct in real time, with only recurring issues shared to the Motive Dashboard for further support.
How does a Coaching Session work?
Motive makes it easy to coach drivers virtually through the Motive Driver App. Managers can also coach in person or virtually using Coaching Sessions.
Instead of coaching one safety event at a time, Motive’s coaching workflow automatically identifies all drivers and behaviours that require attention. When you start a Coaching Session, you see a comprehensive view of your drivers’ coachable events, unsafe driving patterns, and coaching history.
Pro Tips clearly explain each behaviour, their associated risks, and ways to prevent them going forward. And with false positives removed by EVE, Motive’s Event Validation Engine, you can push all safety events to the Driver App so drivers can self-coach.
How does Motive identify positive driving?
It’s now easier than ever to recognise and reward your drivers for the smart and safe decisions they make on the road. Motive automatically identifies positive driving behaviours like safe distancing and alert driving:
- Safe distancing: A driver slows down and maintains their composure after being cut off, quickly creating a safe following distance to manage the hazard.
- Proactive awareness: A driver demonstrates exceptional hazard perception, whether reacting safely to unexpected obstacles like road debris and pedestrians, or promptly giving way to approaching emergency services
The Motive Safety Team has two key objectives when they immediately review safety events and potential collisions:
- Remove false positives.
- Identify positive driving.
With other solutions, safety managers have to spend time reviewing each video and tagging them for positive behaviours. But with Motive, this happens automatically to save time. Safety Managers can start coaching sessions by reinforcing positive driving behaviour, building driver trust and a stronger safety culture.
How do I customise safety thresholds to meet my organisation’s needs?
Motive’s safety solution gives you granular control over safety event video capture, in-cab alerts, and Safety Scores. Tailor your safety programme to your company’s needs and decide which events to detect and at what thresholds.
In the Motive Dashboard, select the behaviour you want to set a threshold for and adjust the slider. Take mobile phone usage as an example. You can set speed and duration thresholds for both capturing event video and sending the driver an in-cab alert.
There are two ways Motive customers customise their safety programme to avoid being bombarded with safety videos or exposed to liability.
- Alert drivers in-cab without capturing event video.
- Capture video only if drivers ignore in-cab alerts.
How can I use the Safety Score to reward drivers?
The Motive Safety Score helps you show appreciation for drivers. It makes it easy to:
- Identify your fleet’s top performers.
- Highlight excellent drivers with recognition or bonuses.
- Reward drivers who are consistently improving.
There are two easy ways to include Safety Score in your incentive programme. To get recognition or a bonus, drivers need to do one of the following:
- Meet minimum score requirements
- Earn different rewards depending on where their score falls.
You can layer on additional bonuses to encourage specific behaviours. For example, drivers can get rewarded if they meet a challenge of the month, like:
- Have zero speeding violations
- Have zero mobile phone usage events
- Complete all coaching videos
Drivers can also earn bigger rewards if they meet annual targets, like having zero preventable accidents or keeping a “Good” Safety Score for the entire year.
Coaching isn’t just about safety incidents. You can also introduce rewards for high standards during roadside inspections, maintaining clean tachograph records, and consistently completing daily walkaround checks.
Bonus: Don’t forget to recognise your top coaches. You can measure and track their progress with Motive’s coaching reports.
How do I know which drivers need coaching?
Motive makes it easy to focus on drivers who need coaching. The Coaching section of the Motive Dashboard displays drivers that need coaching based on their coachable events.
How does coaching impact fleet productivity?
Coaching with Motive’s Driver Safety Platform can have a massive effect on your fleet’s overall efficiency. Fleets that use Motive spend 31% less time reviewing dash cam videos and coaching compared to legacy systems. This saves your business time and improves safety outcomes.
How do I get buy-in from drivers on coaching?
When rolling out AI dash cams, take a coaching-first approach.
- Recognise safe driving habits. Prepare clips that highlight driving and play them in the break room or in safety meetings to build drivers’ confidence in dash cams. The Motive AI Dashcam identifies positive driving behaviours automatically, making it easy to reward drivers for responsible driving behaviour.
- Track Safety Scores to celebrate and reward drivers. The Motive Safety Score shows when a driver’s driving performance improves. When scores improve, give your drivers credit and reward them for a job safely done.
- Create a structured coaching process. Clear guidelines for improvement help drivers feel supported, not penalised. Focus on progress instead of punishment to build a culture of safety.
How can Motive’s AI Dashcams better protect my fleet?
Motive proactively protects your drivers and bottom line with AI Dashcams. HD footage improves visibility, expedites incident investigations, and exonerates drivers. Our video clips allow customers to see what happens both before and after the event is captured. Most video events default to 15 seconds. Customers tend to prefer this because they can see what happens both before and after the event is captured.
Along with clear video footage, we help safety managers prioritise which drivers need coaching the most and provide personalised, timely feedback to drivers on critical unsafe behaviours. We also enable safety managers to maintain a record of coaching activity. Motive provides personalised, timely feedback to drivers on critical unsafe behaviours. We also enable safety managers to maintain a record of coaching activity. Our in-house safety team reviews events, so safety managers can prioritise the drivers that need coaching.
